How Does CoinStats Identify Undervalued Coins?

When investors research a stock investment, they analyze a company’s market capitalization or market cap. In the way a company’s value is calculated by multiplying the total number of shares of a stock by its present share price, we too can make similar calculations regarding rare coins. The market cap equivalent in PCGS coins is the population of a coin – i.e. the number of coins graded by PCGS – multiplied by the price guide for that coin. With CoinStats, we can take market capitalization of each coin in the six most popular series of rare U.S. gold and silver coins graded MS63 through MS67+. Despite the fact that the prices from www.pcgs.com are considered to be a retail price guide, (the purchase price can actually be lower than pcgs.com in many cases) using that price as a constant we are able to make fair comparisons.

In comparing the market cap of coins, CoinStats is able to take the important first step in identifying undervalued coins. Next, CoinStats calculates the price and PCGS population as compared to coins the next grade higher, using a differential percentage. Knowing the largest percentage decrease in population of a coin’s next grade up and combining this with that coins highest percentage increase in price can be a vital tool in identifying the best investment opportunities, given collectors and investors are often priced out of the market for the next grade up, as well as not being able to locate coins with extremely low populations. Then we turn our attention to the next grade higher value to determine the percentage differential, which in turn causes prices to take off accordingly. Collectors building a registry collection, and needing to purchase all the coins in the collection, use CoinStats to prioritize their want list.

Each issue of CoinStats will detail the population and recommended value by grade for each coin in the series, breaking down market cap and highlighting instances of increased upside potential.

Additionally, populations are totaled for each PCGS grade, as well as for series registry sets, noting fluctuations to present the most complete over view of changes within the series each quarter. These insights help build a foundation for making more informed investment decisions and increasing returns. We are currently offering up to six series of popular U.S. classic coins: The Walking Liberty Half-Dollar, The Peace Dollar, The Morgan Dollar, The $10 Gold Indian, The $20 Gold Liberty and $20 Saint Gaudens. We will be adding more series as the demand calls for it.
